Work - Life Balance is the Wrong Goal

If you’ll put “hug (or show my love to) my kids” at the top of your Things to Do list every day, you’re guaranteed that at the end of the day, no matter how much or how little you sold, at least you got the most important task accomplished. That’s better than balance!

Most sales people live a hurried life and time is of the essence. While I agree that in sales, time is money, I question the cost of polluting our bodies with so much junk food that permanent damage is done. If you drive yourself to diabetes or a heart attack you will be unable to enjoy spending all your hard earned commissions and bonuses in your retirement years.

We have all heard the age old saying a million times "You are what you eat."

For many salespeople that means we are a syrupy mess of soda, fat filled fries and burgers that we gulp down in our cars as we rush from prospect to prospect. What a scary picture!

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is essential to feeling good and looking good. When you feel good and look good you gain confidence and confidence is a killer sales tool. I'm positive, that at this moment, you are nodding your head yes. It makes sense that we should watch what we eat and strive for a balanced, healthy diet. So here is the question? Why do so many Sales Professionals fail to fill their bodies with healthy, nutritious food? The answer: Time is Money!

The key to balancing the "need for speed" with a good diet is a little self-discipline coupled with a little pre-planning. Take a few minutes each morning to think about and plan your meals for the day. Give yourself a little extra time on your schedule for lunch and dinner to ensure that you are not so rushed or hungry that you just pick the first thing you see. Carry water and fruit with you in a cooler so that you won't stop at convenience stores to get sodas and chips. And, no matter what, eat something for breakfast everyday. Your health is worth taking time to make good decisions!

Three PowerPrinciples for Healthy Eating

Eliminate Sodas: A recent scientific review published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that a mere 12 ounces of sugar filled soda a day could pile on 15 pounds in a year. The most popular drink size that is sold today is a 20-ounce portion, which comes to 250 unnecessary calories and about 17 teaspoons of sugar. Choose to eliminate this one today!

Choose Healthy Fast Food: Most fast food restaurants offer a variety of healthy choices. When eating at Wendy's opt for their chili instead of burger and fries, the chili is a great choice and very satisfying. When at Mc Donald's go for their salad or Fruit and Walnut Salad. Make choices that are on the lighter side and you won't be so intimated to step on the scale!

Pack Your Lunch: This is a great way to eat more fruits and vegetables! Summer is an awesome time of year to add this healthy habit to your life. You will feel so much better eating more fruits and veggies and the antioxidants will help fend off sickness in your body.
