Attitude Altitude

In a recent conversation with a good friend on the impact of attitude on success in sales and life I was reminded of one of my favorite modern parables. The story goes something like this… A few years ago a major research project was commissioned by world renowned university. The purpose of the study was to objectively develop operational definitions for pessimists and optimists for use in textbooks, academic papers, and classroom learning.

The dictionary defines easy (E-zE) as: causing or involving little difficulty or discomfort, requiring or indicating little effort, thought, or reflection, not severe - not difficult to endure or undergo. I believe "Easy" is a relative term.  It is affected by our willingness to embrace a challenge, examine all of the possibilities and work by ourselves or as a team to get it done. I have used the saying "It's easy" for most of my life. I use it when I am faced with a new task, when I am reviewing or presenting a new project or when I am taking on new challenge.  It is almost an automatic response for me when the inevitable question comes up . . . How do we do that? or Can you do that? I always respond the same way - "It's easy!"

ImageWe are all familiar by now with the famous TV ads for the office supply chain that has the "easy" button.  They show people in difficult situations or that have immediate needs - presto they press the easy button and they get it done for you very easily.  It sends a great message and thanks to those nice folks, I have a cool button to use when I talk about my belief that . . . "It's easy"

I have used the saying "It's easy" for most of my life. I use it when I am faced with a new task, when I am reviewing or presenting a new project or when I am taking on new challenge.  It is almost an automatic response for me when the inevitable question comes up . . . How do we do that? or Can you do that? I always respond the same way - "It's easy!" It seems a bit cavalier but truly it is a mechanism that I trigger to calm the nerves ignite the energy and prepare myself to examine the situation at hand.  When I am in a group or part of a team, people often laugh or make jokes when I say "it's easy".  They say . . . "You think everything is easy" or "Easy for you to say"  but a funny thing happens when I continue to believe it can be easy - others start to believe it too and all of a sudden we get done with the task and then we look back with a chuckle and say that wasn't so bad - it was easy.

Here are some things I would like you to think about.

Think about your job.

It's easy . . . to give yourself the day off to sleep in and relax

and - It's easy . . . to miss out on opportunities if you don't go to work

Think about your last challenge.

It's easy to . . . give up on a challenge because it seems too hard

and - It's easy to . . . face the challenge- fight through and succeed because you had the will to make it happen

Think about taking on a monument us task.

It's easy . . . to say you can't lift a small car

and - It's easy . . . if you ask 12 or 15 of your friends to help you lift it

Think about your competitors in business.

It's easy . . . to say the competition has a better product

and - It's easy . . . to not sell your product if you worry about theirs

Think about your motivation.

It's easy . . . to make a decision to do better

and - It's easy . . . to fail if you don't take the first step to make it happen

As always, I believe my principle applies to our personal and professional lives. During one of my workshop presentations titled "It's easy" I show a number of video clips of people that are presented with what seems to be impossible or improbable tasks - yet they achieve them with a proficiency that makes it look easy. Imagine a video of a guy who works at a cell phone company standing in front of a thousand people living out his dream as an unlikely opera singer.

Think about this.

It's easy . . . for this man to believe he's not good enough

and - It's easy . . . for him to believe he can't if he does not try

{sidebar id=3} All of our choices or actions are easy, it is easy to choose a path to success and it's just as easy to choose a path to failure or defeat.

It's easy . . . to go through life and say it's too hard

It's hard . . . to look yourself in the mirror everyday - if you don't try or if you give up before you use all of your resources to try and make it "easy" and find yourself on the receiving end of a standing ovation.

I will leave you with this thought: The beauty in life is that we have the ability to choose the path we take and we can choose whether we make it hard or we make it "easy".

Make an Impression, Be an Inspiration.
