5 Tips for Job Seekers
Tom’s 5 Tips for Job Seekers
From his book he called “Shifting Into Higher Gear”
Be Prepared before you start your search
o Know what kind of role you want (function, title, company culture, $)
o Have answers to: Why are you the best person and why should I hire you?
When you send your resume to someone online
o Add extra key words to the end of your resume and change the font to white so the reader can’t see them but the scanning software that hiring managers use to sort through resumes will pick them up…helping you get an interview
Create an Action room to do your search
o Pick a define space to work – helps you to stay organized
o Post a map define where you want to look for work (commuting time)
o Create files of info for your search (network lists, tracking forms, info…)
Do your homework – Use a Reference Librarian
o Target the company you want to work for
o Research these companies – (location, mission, key management)
o The internet is fine, but it doesn’t reason through your needs like a Librarian.
Go after the job you want…Don’t wait for someone to post it
o There are many jobs left open – companies don’t have to find post jobs
o Mid to Senior Managers are always looking for top performers
o Less competition for the job you want.
